Law 17 — The Corner Kick

The last Law and the shortest. The essentials: the ball must be placed **inside** the corner arc and the corner flagpost may not be moved.

When it is awarded

When the ball, last touched by a defending player, wholly passes over the goal line without a goal being scored.

Execution

The ball is placed inside the corner arc nearest to where it crossed the line. It is in play once kicked and clearly moving. It does not need to leave the corner arc.

The corner flag

The corner flagpost must not be moved. This is a common offence the referee must correct before allowing the kick.

Opponents

Must remain at least 9.15 metres from the corner arc until the ball is in play.

Goals and offside

A goal may be scored directly from a corner kick, but only against the opposing team. There is no offside from a corner kick received directly.
